Central Road Research Institute (CRRI)

HISTORY
CRRI is a premier National research institute in the area of roads and road transport, founded in 1952 which is situated at the eleventh kilometre on Delhi - Mathura Road (NH-2) in New Delhi. The Institute is equipped with modern laboratories manned by highly qualified professionals of different disciplines (like engineering, physical and social sciences).

CRRI endeavours to develop professional excellence in the area of roads and road transport through world class research and development program, consultancy services and human resources development activities.
CRRI is an ISO accredited institution, and therefore, all the project works are carried out as per carefully prepared quality plans to meet ISO-9001 requirements. Further, as per the established CSIR system, there is in place a Customer Satisfaction Evaluation requirement for the projects.
The Institute has 88 R&D divisions, 77 R&D Support divisions and 5 Administrative divisions. Also highly qualified and experienced 120 Scientists with PhD/Master degrees in various subjects to undertake interdisciplinary activities.

OBJECTIVE
To carry out basic and applied research, in line with the national priorities for investigation, construction and maintenance of different types of roads and airfield runways, including related materials such as aggregates, bitumen, cement, etc. with a view to effecting economy and achieving enhanced serviceability.
FUNCTIONS
§ Research on the utilisation of locally available materials (conventional, waste and marginal) for construction & maintenance of road economically.
§ To research on the performance of different types of roads under varying climatic and traffic conditions.
§ Research and development in all aspects of road traffic and transportation engineering, including study of accidents, development of road safety measures.
§ To train road technologists through workshops and training programmes for wider application of good practices in road.
§ Develop appropriate tools, machinery, equipments for adopting technologies related to highway engineering.
§ Establishment of extension units, display centres, etc. to further the scope of scientific and technological research and development.
§ To represent various professional committees related to roads, transportation and environmental issues.
§ Develop and assist other institutions or departments of the institutions for scientific study

The institute has developed adequate knowledge base and knowledge workers in most of the areas in road research, work assignments in the form of consultancy, contract research, sponsored research etc. are the sources of knowledge development.
Scientists and Technical officers in the institute have contributed in this effort. Different levels of the scientists who are at present working in the institute are introduced through “junior”, “Middle” and “Senior”. Scientist are distributed in different specialized area.
