From the President

Season’s Greetings!

1.    SED is marching forward. My heartiest congratulation to those who are taking active role in the process.

2.    As you may be aware that the Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE) is organizing a two day national seminar on “Metro Rail Projects : Indian Scenario” in New Delhi during 18-19 November 2011 at Lakshmipat Singhania Auditorium, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, PHD House, August Kranti Marg, New Delhi. India is urbanizing fast. Given that our cities are severely deficient in transportation infrastructure, rail based metro systems, augmented by last mile connectivity, appear to be the most preferred solution. This is what we are seeing in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Pune and even in satellite towns like Noida, Gurgaon & Navi Mumbai. In this Seminar, IAStructE aims to seek discussions amongst planners, policy makers, designers, builders, financiers and system equipment suppliers, the ways and means of accelerating rail based metro implementation in Tier I, Tier II and Tier III urban areas.  We approached many of those who are involved in Metro Rail Projects throughout India. We have received encouragement from wide spectrum of interest groups in this sector. Drawing upon the experience of already executed Metro Rail Projects, we intend to focus the seminar to enhance capacity building in all aspects of the metro rail project, to meet future challenges.

3. As to the Engineer’s Bill, efforts from all quarters – ECI, CEAI and our association are continuing.   We are hoping for early enactment.

With best wishes,

S Ghosh
